Estate Planning FAQs

Estate planning can feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. At The Law Office of Douglas E. Crockett, we’re here to guide you through the process with clarity and compassion. This FAQ section addresses common questions about wills, trusts, asset protection, and more—helping you make informed decisions for your future and your loved ones.

  • How far will you travel?

We will go anywhere in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

  • Do you try to convince participants to give more to the church?

No. Our purpose is to educate about estate planning law and procedure.

  • Is this a stewardship ministry?

Our goal is to help participants manage their possessions for desired distribution upon death. That is a part of what it means to be a good steward. We do not tell participants to whom or for what they should distribute those possessions in life or in death.

  • Are you flexible with the amount of time the educational presentations and study will take?

Yes, we can work to fit your time parameters.

  • How much time do the educational presentations and study last?

Each presentation and study, except for the panel discussion, can be done in an hour or less. The length of the panel discussion will vary depending on the number of professionals on the panel. We can lengthen or shorten our presentations to fit your time parameters.

  • Will participants have time to ask questions?

    Yes.

  • At what point does the firm charge a fee?

We only charge a fee if individuals retain our office to serve as their estate planning attorney.

  • How would a person initiate an attorney-client relationship with your law firm?

Usually, the attorney-client relationship will be initiated by filling out an estate planning questionnaire. This would occur through your church.

  • Do I have to go through my church to receive your firm’s services?

Yes. Anyone can call our office to facilitate coordination between our attorneys and your church of choice.

  • Do you expect or require individuals to retain your firm’s drafting services as a part of the free educational presentations or study?

We will offer our services without any pressure. We would be happy to draft documents for participants, but there is no requirement that anyone retain these services in exchange for our free educational presentations or study offered at your church.

  • Do you have to have a minimum number planning to attend a presentation or study to come to our church?

es. 5, is the minimum number. In some cases, we would be willing to bypass the presentation and provide basic will, power of attorney, and advanced medical directives for a group from the church.

  • Are people required to preregister for a presentation?

We recommend that the church preregister interested people to ensure a minimum of 5 participants.
